Aspartame. Everyone has an opinion on it. I notice a lot of diet books, diet sites, etc. say to drink diet coke, not coke. Eat low calories foods, drinks usually containing aspartame. A friend of mine will not drink a regular pop to save her life. It HAS to be diet diet diet. She also uses Splenda which she claims is better, as well as Stevia.
I for one eat sugar. Unbleached raw sugar. I will not eat Aspartame, Splenda or Stevia. Yes, I am overweight, but I don't think its worth it. About 20 minutes after I have my first mouthful of Diet Pop I have the Worst. Headache. Ever. And I KNOW it's the Aspartame.
On the more extreme side of things: My sister used to drink 4 Litres of diet coke every single day. That's extreme. I don't think many people drink that much in one day. Over about 3 years, she was very sick. The doctors were positive she had MS. She had tingling in her hands, she couldn't think straight, she was in a lot of pain, and some days she could not get out of bed. She literally could not walk. She did not have the strength the stand - even for a moment. She had an MRI and thank Goodness it was not MS. She lived like this for a while when I suggested she go to a Naturopath. Conventional medicine was not working, she was willing to try anything. The first thing the Naturopath said is "do you drink diet pop" she said yes. He said stop. She did... and within about 6 months, she was fine. She is a whole new person. It's amazing. That is the main reason I refuse Aspartame.

I'm 100% with you on this one. I hate artificial sweetners (unless of course it's xylitol) since it really isn't an artificial form but our bodies don't recognize it as a sugar. Anyways there have been so many things linking aspartame and other artificial sweetners with different types of medical problems. It just plain is not good for us! We should seek other options and continue speaking with naturopaths instead of traditional doctors who think they know everything and only treat the symptoms and not the causes.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more! I love unbleached raw sugar or stevia in my coffee, and I only sweeten with raw agave nectar in my hot tea. Aspartame is scary stuff!
ReplyDeleteMy hubby had aspartame poisoning. I know just how bad it can be. So, I don't ever use any artifical sweeteners. Splenda is sugar that has chlorine added to it and isn't any better than the others even though it is advertised that way.
ReplyDeleteI use Sucanat (SUgar CAne NATural) and agave nectar, stevia and xylitol.
I will say that I use Splenda in iced tea. I tend to drink regular soda when I drink it.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest evil in the unnatural sweetening world is Malitol. It's horrible. It makes you have horrible fits of diarrhea if you eat too much. I mean, worst experience ever and no one warns you.
I get sick if I have something with Aspartame in it or any of the other fake sugars. I get a headache & dizzy. They seem to be in a lot of things now & lots of times I don't know that it is in it, but try to check.
